Mary M. Axe, 89, of St. Marys, died on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at the Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

Mary was born on Jan. 15, 1922, in St. Marys, to August “Gus” and Nettie Mae (Bower) Schaffer.

On Dec. 24, 1945, in St. Marys, she married Richard “Red” Axe, and he preceded her in death in 1978.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Otto) Schrolucke of St. Marys and Pamela Axe of St. Marys; a granddaughter, Susan (Jeffery) Long of Bridgman, Mich.; two great-grandsons, Nathan and Brandon Long of Bridgman, Mich.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Orley “Mike” and Ferd Schaffer; three sisters, Hazel Vining, Goldie Slemmons and Lonnie Harruff.

Mary attended the St. Marys City Schools, and she was a dedicated homemaker her entire adult life. She enjoyed needlework, jig saw puzzles, cooking and her soap operas. Her family was her passion, and spoiling her granddaughter was her life time mission. Mary was a very loving and humble person who will be missed by her family.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Robert Warren officiating. Burial will follow at the Resthaven Memory Gardens in Moulton.
