MARIA STEIN — Marion Local dominated the New Bremen Cardinals with 365 total yards of offense and coasted to a 55-8 win on Friday night.
Jake Heitkamp rushed for 117 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Flyers in the Midwest Athletic Conference romp.
“I thought offensively we ran the ball pretty good,” Flyers head coach Tim Goodwin said. “They were playing man and giving us a lot of eight man fronts so it was nice to see us run the ball.”
New Bremen falls to 0-3 and 0-1 in the MAC.
“We were just got physically outmatched,” New Bremen head coach Rob Messick said. “They came and we allowed it to happen. We did not come out and hit them. We knew we had to match them anytime we play Marion Local.”
The Cardinals received the opening kickoff, but were stopped three and out and forced to punt. The Flyers started at the Cardinals 43 and went six plays before Jack Homan to the handoff and went the final four yards. The extra point kick by Lee Pierron made the score 7-0 with 8:09 left.
The Flyers went in for one more score in the first quarter when Jake Heitkamp broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown. The kick was good giving the Flyers a 14-0 lead with 2:17 left.
Marion Local got the ball right at the end of the quarter and three plays into the second quarter quarterback Adam Bertke completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jake Heitkamp. The two point conversion pass from Dylan Thobe was good to Marcus Prenger for a 22-0 lead with 11:08 left.
The Flyers scored two more touchdowns before halftime on a six yard Pass from Heitkamp to Dylan Thobe with 7:48 left for a 28-0 lead and they scored on a 31-yard pass from Alex Rosenbeck to Jack Homan with 3:44 left to make the score 34-0 at halftime.
“We had some success pitching the ball to the outside,” Messick said. “It is not too hard when a team makes you one dimensional and it isn’t too hard for them to take that away.”
In the third quarter the Flyers didn’t score until 5:08 left when Bertke went in from a yard out to make the score 41-0.
New Bremen had a mistake on their next possession when Peyton Kremer intercepted an Elliott Westerbeck pass for a 25-yard touchdown and a 48-0 lead with 2:34 left.
The Cardinals avoided the shutout on the next possession when Westerbeck broke loose on a 57-yard run up the middle. Nate Skinner ran for the two points to make the score 48-8 with 1:16 left.
Westerbeck led the Cardinals with 71 yards rushing and went 8-of-21 for 70 yards passing for NewBremen.
“As far as passing we have to take a little more chances with the ball,” Messick said. “Defensively Marion Local is one of the best teams to prepare for because we know exactly what they are going to do.”
“Defensively we were able to reduce them to a one dimensional team,” Goodwin said. “They had some success with their quarterback at times, but I think we have been solid all three games.”
The final score of the game came about nine minutes into the fourth quarter when Austin Albers went in from three yards out to make the final score 55-8.
“We just have to become more aggressive,” Messick said. “We have to fix that and this team can. They just have to believe that they can do it.”
The Cardinals (0-3, 0-1) entertains Fort Recovery next Friday, while the Flyers (2-1, 1-0) travel to Minster.
