25 Years Ago This Week – 1988

This week in 1988, the Minster Wildcats improved to 4-0 overall and picked up their first Midwest Athletic Conference victory of the season when they dropped the Parkway Panthers by a final of 42-6.

The Wildcats scored twice in the first period and twice more before halftime as they took a 30-0 lead at the break.  They continued to roll in the third quarter with two more scores and led 42-0 heading into the fourth.

The Wildcats bombed the Panthers for nearly 400 rushing yards in the game and were led by Toby Meyer, who finished with 115 yards on ten carries.  James Wolf added 87 yards on his nine carries, while Mark Prenger chipped in 63 yards on twelve totes in the victory.  Wolf scored three touchdowns in the battle, while Meyer added two more in a meeting that was a blowout from the start.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963

Fifty years ago this week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders headed to Lima to lock up with the Shawnee Indians and unfortunately it was a long drive home, as the Indians rolled to the easy 52-14 victory.  Shawnee hit pay dirt twice in the opening period and connected for a two-point conversion as they jumped in front, 14-0.

They added another touchdown just before halftime and held a 22-0 advantage at intermission.  Another score early in the third quarter put the home team in charge 28-0 after a failed extra point.  St. Marys answered with a touchdown of their own a few moments later when Ron Jones crossed the goal line following a ten-yard touchdown reception.

The two-point conversion was successful after Ralph Hecht dialed in and connected with Tom Hollman for the points.  The Roughrider score didn’t faze the Indians however, as they scored twice more in the final quarter to extend their advantage to 52-8.  St. Marys’ final score of the night came near the end of the contest when Joe Martin punched it in with a five-yard run.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

This week in 2003, the state-ranked Minster Wildcats volleyball team remained unbeaten on the season with a two-set victory over the neighboring New Bremen Cardinals.

Head coach Rick Carter’s girls took the Cardinals down in the opening contest 15-10, before sending them home with a 15-9 final in game two.  With the league victory, the Orange and Black kept their paws on the steering wheel in the Midwest Athletic Conference at 5-0, while also improving to 14-0 overall.
