A look at area sports 50, 25 and 10 years ago:
50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
This week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders headed north to Montpelier for a day of football scrimmages in both the morning and afternoon.
The Roughriders tallied four touchdowns in the morning session and pulled away with the 24-12 victory in the pre-season meeting. Tommy Hollman scored twice in the win with a 50-yard run and a ten-yard pass from quarterback Ralph Hecht.
Ronnie Jones chalked up another touchdown with a two-yard jaunt, while the final score was a result of fine reserve teamwork when Larry Rasche connected with Floyd Keith for a 40-yard touchdown pass.
Montpelier’s two scores were results of long passes. The Roughriders scored four more touchdowns and a safety in the afternoon contest as they dominated Montpelier by a final of 26-0.
Hollman and Jones sprinted for 80-yard touchdowns on consecutive plays while Hecht and Billy Steinecker picked up the other two scores. Steinecker also accounted for St. Marys’ safety when he nailed the Montpelier quarterback in the end zone later in the meeting.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1988
This week in 1988, it was time for the annual ‘Chicken Bowl’ scrimmage in St. Marys, and the Roughriders didn’t disappoint their local fans as they outscored Urbana 28-25 in front of a capacity crowd at Memorial High School.
The victory broke a three-year losing skid that St. Marys had endured at the hands of the Hillclimbers dating back to the 1985 season. Unofficially the home team piled up more than 300 yards of offense as they prepared for their home-opener the following week when the Sidney Yellow Jackets came to town.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2003
Ten years ago this week in 2002, the St. Marys football team opened up Western Buckeye League play with an exciting, 19-15 victory at home over the Defiance Bulldogs.
Both teams engaged in the battle beneath an annoying downpour that soaked things all the way through the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs took the initial lead of the contest at 3-0; only to have Justin Nagel return the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for pay dirt.
A few minute later, Cory Vossler hooked up with Shawn Craft for a 25-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch to put their team in front, 13-3 with about seven minutes left before halftime.
The Bulldogs quickly responded with a touchdown pass right before halftime and then took the 15-13 lead midway through the third period following their second missed PAT of the evening.
With just under seven minutes left in the game, Eric Sullivan scored the Roughriders’ winning touchdown. Although the conversion failed, the Roughriders soon went on to secure the four-point victory that pushed them to 2-0 on the young season.
