50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
Fifty years ago this week, St. Marys native Galen Cisco improved to 4-6 on the season after earning credit for the Mets’ win over the Chicago Cubs the day before. Cisco allowed just one hit in three innings of relief work in New York’s 14-inning victory. In 80 innings of action so far in the 1963 season, Cisco had struck out 47 batters and walked 38 with an earned run average of 4.50. His most recent outing before the win over the Cubs was in nine total innings of relief the week before when he gave up only three runs and eight hits in two appearances against the St. Louis Cardinals.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1988
This week in 1988, the St. Marys American Legion baseball team improved to 14-4 on the season with four victories over the weekend in Wapakoneta. They began the tournament with a 9-8 triumph over Van Wert in eight innings, while capping the evening off by edging Van Wert again by a final of 6-5. The following afternoon, St. Marys opened with an 11-2 blowout over Mount Vernon before coming from behind in their second game against them and posting the 9-7 win. Minster’s Rex Kremer picked up a win from the mound in the first game against Van Wert, while his teammate Mike Wiss improved to 2-0 on the season following his victory in relief the following day in the first game against Mount Vernon.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2003
In ACME baseball action ten years ago this week, the Minster Wildcats hosted Fort Recovery and sent the Indians packing with an 11-5 beat down. Fort Recovery scored initially with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but the Orange and Black shook it off and quickly plated five runs, only to have the Indians knot the contest a few innings later. The Wildcats bounced back once again with four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame and from there, never looked back as they added two more scores in the sixth to seal the six-run victory. Overall, Eric Bernhold was 3-for-4 with six RBI, while Wes Sherman was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Dusty Ellis struck out nine and walked three in his victory from the hill for the ‘Cats.
