50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys football team revved up the 1963 campaign with a 24-8 victory over the Sidney Yellow Jackets in front of 3,300 fans at Memorial Stadium. The ‘Riders wasted little time flexing their muscle and scored in eight plays on their initial offensive drive of the game when quarterback Ralph Hecht hit the end zone from two yards out. The Roughriders missed the two-point conversion and Sidney pulled in front 8-6 with just over five minutes to play in the first period. The score remained the same through halftime, but St. Marys bumped back in front in the third, 12-8, when Hecht connected with Ron Jones for a ten-yard touchdown strike. St. Marys’ next strike was in the fourth quarter when Tommy Hollman bulled into the end zone with a two-yard touchdown. Leading 18-8, St. Marys finished things off with 1:20 to go in the contest when Jones raced 21 yards for pay dirt. The Roughriders failed on their fourth two-point conversion of the game, but went on to the 16-point victory.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1988
Twenty-five years ago this week, the New Bremen Cardinals hosted the Ridgemont Golden Gophers in non-league football action and blasted them out of town with a 45-0 drubbing. The Cardinals returned the first punt of the game for a score and a few minutes later, Steve Quellhorst put his team in command 15-0 with a 45-yard touchdown run. Quellhorst then intercepted a pass on the ensuing series, and four plays later quarterback Chad Williams connected with Bruce Bornhorst for a 16-yard touchdown, followed by another two-point conversion. Leading 23-0 and still in the first half, the Cardinals added another score on a touchdown pass from Williams to Doug Schaefer for his second score of the night and the 30-0 Cardinal advantage. On their next offensive drive, Williams and Schaefer hooked up again for a 53-yard touchdown bomb to extend their lead to 37-0. Before halftime, Quellhorst sprinted 27 yards for the score and New Bremen went into the locker room in front by 43 points. A safety in the second half was all the Cardinals tallied, but by then the game was well in hand.
