Local Man Dies From Crash Injuries

November 11, 2011

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys man driving a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle crash early Monday morning died Thursday afternoon.

Garet Schmehl, 20, died at Miami Valley Hospital, in Dayton, where he had been taken from Joint Township District Memorial Hospital after the crash at 1:20 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Glynwood Road and Ohio 116. He had remained in critical condition throughout the week.

A passenger, Jeremy Robinson, of St. Marys, who also was injured in the crash and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital on Monday in fair condition, has since been released.

Funeral arrangements for Schmehl are being completed with the Miller Funeral Home, in St. Marys.

Schmehl was driving east on Glynwood Road on Monday when he failed to yield at a posted stop sign at Ohio 116 and lost control of his vehicle while traveling over a slight hill at the intersection. The vehicle slid sideways, hit a guardrail, went airborne over a creek, struck several trees and a steel post, and overturned several times before it came to a rest, according to reports from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Schmehl, who was wearing a seat belt, had to be extracted from the vehicle using mechanical means. Robinson, who also was wearing a seat belt, was extracted using nonmechanical means.

Lt. Scott Carrico, commander of the Wapakoneta Post of the Highway Patrol, said there have been no new developments in their investigation.

Speed was a factor in the crash, as Schmehl was driving approximately 30 mph over the posted speed limit — 85 mph in a 55 mph zone at the time of he crash.
