Local BOE OKs changes

July 29, 2011

ST. MARYS — During a special meeting Friday afternoon, St. Marys Board of Education members adjusted personnel items and recognized one of their own.

Board members accepted the resignation of Ken Neff as St. Marys Middle School principal and the resignation of Mary Miller as St. Marys Middle School assistant principal. They then appointed Miller as principal of St. Marys Middle School, effective this upcoming school year.

Neff, who has served the St. Marys City School District for three years as middle school principal, has taken the position of high school principal for the Greenville City School district.

Miller has been with the district since 1997 when she was hired as a teacher. She was hired as an administrator in 2007 — first as an elementary assistant principal, then as middle school assistant principal.

Board members also approved the nomination of Board Member Rees McKee for the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) Outstanding Board Member Award — a statewide award.

“It’s an honor to be nominated by my board peers,” McKee said of the nomination.

This is the first nomination of its kind for McKee, who should know if he will receive the award by the OSBA’s conference in November.

“Mr. McKee does whatever it takes to provide quality facilities and staff to serve the students of St. Marys City Schools,” Superintendent Mary Riepenhoff described McKee’s greatest attribute in McKee’s nomination form, giving the example of McKee, who, on his own, is currently renovating modular classrooms to be used as locker rooms for the football season and by sitting on all administrative hiring committees.

“In just my short three years with Mr. McKee, I have yet to meet anyone in any district who is more available, more committed and more passionate about his school,” Riepenhoff wrote. “He loves St. Marys City Schools. The hours he quietly devotes to the district are uncountable, the value to the district immeasurable.”

The next meeting of the St. Marys Board of Education will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the high school-middle school.
