Lincoln Exhibit Opens

August 29, 2013

ST. MARYS — A traveling exhibit on one of America’s greatest presidents is set to open in Auglaize County today.

The Auglaize County Public Library system and the Auglaize County Historical Society will be hosting “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a traveling exhibit that will be on display through Oct. 12. In addition to the traveling exhibit, branches of the Auglaize County Public Library system and the St. Marys Community Public Library will host presentations related to Abraham Lincoln and the Constitution.

“It was five years ago, which is hard to believe, that we have been looking forward to this for that long,” Auglaize County Historical Society Administrator Rachel Barber said during Wednesday’s St. Marys Rotary Club meeting. “A lot of things have been happening as we have tried to assemble a lot of programming so people feel like they are completely saturated with the subject of Lincoln, the Constitution and the Civil War.”

Presentation will include music from the Civil War as well as a screening at the Wapa Theater of Academy Award nominated film “Lincoln.” Barber said she also is working with local school district to plan field trips to the exhibit.

“It’s my understanding, according to the content standards, this is very appropriate for grades four, eight and 10,” Barber said. “So we are especially focusing on trying to get those groups in, and we would like to have any groups come in.”

Barber noted one of the highlights of the presentations is an appearance by Pulitzer Prize winner Steven Hahn of the University of Pennsylvania. Hahn will give a talk entitled “Why the Civil War Mattered” at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Wapakoneta Middle School, 400 Harrison St.

“Because we were awarded this exhibit, early on there was some funding available for accompanying programming,” Barber said. “We are very excited about this possibility.”

The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. today at the Wapakoneta branch, 203 S. Perry St., Wapakoneta. For more information on the exhibit or any of the presentations, call 419-738-2921 or e-mail AuglaizeCountyHistory.bright.net.
