Library Renewing Magazine Program

March 23, 2012

ST. MARYS — Over the next two weeks, a local library will be holding a magazine drive to renew its magazine subscriptions that are available for patrons.

The St. Marys Community Public Library is holding its annual Adopt a Magazine drive, in which community members can buy a magazine subscription for the library. St. Marys Community Public Library Director Sue Pittman said the library has already had numerous magazine subscription donations.

"We spend approximately $2,000 on magazines each year, and everything has been adopted except about $400 worth," she said. "We have approximately 75 magazines total to be adopted and we have 20 yet to go."

The annual Adopt a Magazine drive, Pittman said, began in 2009 and is a way for patrons to give back to the St. Marys Community Public Library.

"People like to give back to the library and this is one of the ways in which they can do it,"  Pittman said.

She noted that area residents have regularly participated in the drive.

"People from the community have taken an interest in the project and have adopted  the magazines," she said.

Pittman said the drive allows the library to renew the magazines at the same time each year, keeping things more organized.

"By ordering them at the same time, they renew at the same time, so there is a regular schedule," Pittman said.

Approximately 20 magazines still need to be adopted, including O: The Oprah Magazine, Ladies' Home Journal, Better Homes & Gardens, Good Housekeeping, National Geographic and Seventeen, among others. Most subscriptions cost between $20 and $25. A list of the magazines yet to be adopted and their prices is on display at the St. Marys Community Public Library.

Pittman noted that the library also accepts monetary gifts to purchase books or other library materials, and anyone interested in making a donation can contact the library for more information.

"Oftentimes, people will give a donation in memory of someone or in honor of someone," she said.
