Leon E. Gerling, 85

Leon E. Gerling, 85, of 525 W. Bremen St., New Knoxville, passed away at 9:47 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2011, at  Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1925, in Minster, the son of Frank and Jennie (Bolheimer) Gerling, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 2, 1972, he married Rosemary W. (Landwehr) Burris, and she survives in New Knoxville.

He is also survived by his sons, Thomas Gerling of Celina, and Edward Gerling of Winchester, Ind.; stepchildren, Joe (Connie) Gurski of St. Paris, Nancy Burris Anderson of New Bremen, Jeanne Burris (Gary) Hasenkamp of Delphos and Ned (Donna) Burris of Liberty Township; seven grandchildren, Nathan (Jenny), Erin (Josh), Amber, Andrea, Kylie, Ashley and Natasha; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Eileen Lewis of Midwest City, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Vernon Gerling.

Mr. Gerling was a member of the St. Peter’s Church in New Bremen.  Leon had owned a Sohio Filling Station in New Bremen for many years and then worked for and retired in 1989 from the Minster Machine Co. in Minster. After retiring, he then worked part time for the Siferd-Hasselman Co. in St. Marys. Leon enjoyed gardening, golfing and attending sporting events.  He was awarded the 2008 Fan of the Year by the New Knoxville Rangers Basketball Team. He enjoyed ballroom dancing, playing cards with friends and spending time with friends and family. He especially enjoyed and was proud of building his A-frame house in the woods on Kohler Road, near Wapakoneta.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Peter’s Church in New Bremen, with the Rev. Stephen Wills officiating.  Burial will follow in the Willow Grove Cemetery, New Bremen. Calling hours will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and from 2 p.m.  until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church memorial fund or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
