Leader Local Sports Round-Up - Aug. 8

August 9, 2011

PIQUA — The Minster boys golf team enters this season with a roster without much varsity experience, but the Wildcats showed on Monday that they still have plenty of talent.

Minster emerged from the season’s first tune-up invitational with a victory. The Wildcats fired a team score of 318 to win the Scott Homan Invitational at th Piqua Country Club on Monday.

Austin Fischer led the way for Minster, shooting a 75. Fischer is the just one of two returning letterwinners on the Wildcat roster this fall. After averaging 39.6 shots per nine holes last fall, he’s the leader of the group.

Freshman Xavier Franics added a 79, Freddie Purdy shot an 81, Matt Wuebker had an 83 and Josh Spieles fired n 86 for Minster.

“Other than Austin Fischer, who is a four-year varsity player, we are pretty inexperienced,” Minster head coach Dave Borchers said before the season. “We are pretty inexperienced in varsity competition, but our strong JV team from last year is stepping up nicely.”

Minster lost several pieces to graduation from last year’s team that were a part of the 2009 state championship — including Craig Purpus, who finished fourth individually at state a season ago.

Minster distanced itself from second-place Troy (323) and third-place Sidney Lehman (324).

St. Marys finished eighth in the 18-team field invitational with a 342 team score. Wapakoneta was 13th  with a 354 score.

Sidney Lehman Catholic’s Ben Thieman earned medalist honors with a 71.
