Laverta E.W. Scheer, 94, formerly of New Bremen and a resident of the Otterbein Retirement Community of St. Marys for the past eight years, died at 10:18 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Otterbein.
She was born on June 5, 1918, in Shelby County. She was the daughter of Herbert and Lizzie (Melter) Fischbach. On Nov. 1, 1939, she married Howard Scheer, and he died on Nov. 1, 1997. Survivors include her children, Judy (Wayne) Wiehe of Celina, Donald (Barbara) Scheer of New Bremen and Alfred (Pam) Scheer of St. Marys; grandchildren, Kenneth and Mike Wiehe and Andrew, Melissa, Lori and Brian Scheer and a great-grandson, Kolyn Wiehe.
Preceding her in death was a granddaughter, Angela Scheer; her sister, Madella Frey and a brother in infancy.
Mrs. Scheer was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen where she was active in the Sunday School program, teaching and also was a former Sunday School superintendent.
She was a member of the Busy 12 of the church and volunteered for numerous other activities and missions. She was a member of the Woodman of the World Camp 149 of New Bremen.
She was a 1936 graduate of New Bremen High School. She was a homemaker, and along with her husband were caretakers of the German Protestant Cemetery for more than 26 years. After moving into New Bremen, she became a substitute cook and custodian in the New Bremen Schools.
She was an avid gardener, canning and preserving all her homegrown fruits and vegetables.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the St. Paul United Church of Christ in New Bremen with Rev. Becky Erb Strang officiating. Burial will follow in the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen. Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.
