LIMA — The New Knoxville boys soccer team has grown fond of playing on the turf at Lima Stadium. The success they’ve had there has raised expectations in the Ranger program, too.

New Knoxville’s Ryan Lageman scored three goals and K.V. Mooney added two more in New Knoxville’s 5-1 win over Lima Temple Christian in a Division III sectional final at Lima Stadium on Tuesday evening.

“Sectional champions,” New Knoxville head coach Tony Hunt said. “We used to give T-shirts away for that. We’re used to that now. We don’t do that anymore.”

New Knoxville’s current players are 4-2 on the quick, synthetic surface at Lima Stadium.

“We play well on this turf. It’s so difficult to play on,” Hunt said. “It’s so fast. We do well with it — as good as you can with it. We come to win when we play here.”

New Knoxville is headed to the district semifinal for the second straight season. A year ago the Rangers were edged out by Liberty-Benton 1-0 at Lima Senior. The Rangers will play the winner of the Kalida vs. Fort Jennings/Continental match at Kalida on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 5 p.m. in a district semifinal match. The district final match is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26 at Kalida at 3 p.m.
