Joseph Hugo Schaaf, 83

Joseph Hugo Schaaf, 83, of 1730 Celina Road, St. Marys, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.

He was born on Sept. 3, 1929, in St. Marys, to Hugo and Viola (Mann) Schaaf, and they preceded him in death.

On Aug. 15, 1953, in Brooklyn, Mich., he married Laura Mae “Smiley” King, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1980.

He is survived by four daughters, Anna Kay Langenkamp of St. Marys; Carolyn (Scott) Long of St. Marys, Sheila Jean Dammeyer of St. Marys and Terrie Jo Schaaf of St. Marys; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Dylan Henning; two brothers, David Schaaf and Russell Schaaf; two sisters, Jenny Kanorr and Sadie Schaaf; his infant twin brother; a son-in-law, Jeff Dammeyer.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean War.

He retired from Hayes-Albion Corp. in Spencerville, where he was a lift-truck operator. He had also worked at the Weston Paper Mill in St. Marys and, in his younger days, helped build railroads. He volunteered for the St. Marys Special Fire Department for a number of years.

His favorite pastimes included fishing, horses, hunting, chatting with his buddies on C.B. radio, playing the lottery and attending family gatherings.

Rites are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel), St. Marys, with the Rev. Josh Andrews officiating. Burial, with full graveside military honors, will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.

Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home on Ohio 703 West.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Cancer Association of Auglaize County.
