John J. Truax, 89, of rural Spencerville, died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 in the Roselawn Manor Nursing Home in Spencerville, following a brief illness.
He was born on March 21, 1924, in Franklin, Ohio, son of Glen A. and Jennie S. Kelly Truax, who are deceased.
On May 2, 1948, he married Anna Mae Zimmerman, who survives, along with three children; Daniel J. (Mavis) Truax, of Camden, Mich.; Cindy A. (Michael) Carr, of Pioneer; and Regina S. (Deane) Mann, of Wapakoneta; 10 grandchildren; Christy (John) Potts, Montpelier; Annette (Mike) Potts of Camden, Mich.; Laura (Shannon) Miller of Camden, Mich.; Amy (Matt) Gibson of Grand Lake, Colo.; Sherilyn (Ken) Wood, of Stryker; Kevin and Jeff Carr, of Pioneer; Scott Mann, of New Bremen; Susan Mann, of Wapakoneta; and Shawn Mann, of St. Marys; 18 great grandchildren; Robert, Jennifer, Kyle, Elizabeth, Jake, Brianna, Ethan, Trinity, Anthony, Samantha, Jessica, Jordan, Alexis, Austin, Mariah, Hanna, Zoe and Sarah; one great-great grandson Teegyn; and four siblings; Betty (Robert) Prine, of Delphos; Emma (Robert) Beams, of Marquette, Mich.; Charles (Isabelle) Truax, of Van Wert; and Shirley Murphy, of Findlay; and a brother-in-law; Ken Kautz of Dayton.
He was preceded in death by five siblings; Geraldine (Eugene) Stopher; Pauline (Edward) Speakman; Clara Marie Truax; Rose Walters and Sue Kautz; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Fern Pratte and his 14-year-old pup Velvet.
John was a 1943 graduate of Van Wert High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II on the aircraft carrier Randolph in the South Pacific.
After the war he worked as a fireman on the New York Central railroad and in 1967 they moved back to Anna’s family farm where he retired.
He was a long time member of the Bethlehem Christian Union Church near Buckland, and a life member of VFW Post 5803 in Van Wert.
He enjoyed attending auctions, especially the Hillsdale Sale Barn in Michigan and others.
He was a “people person,” enjoying many visits and handing out his Tootsie Roll candies.
He and Anna enjoyed watching and feeding the birds on the farm.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Bethlehem Church with the Rev. Kent Place and the Rev. Glen Prine officiating. Burial will follow in the Kossuth Cemetery with military rites by the Van Wert Veterans. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville and after 10 a.m. Monday at the church.
