John David Hilty, 93

John David Hilty, 93, formerly of Spencerville, died on Saturday, July 23, 2011, at his residence in Columbus.

He was born on April 5, 1918, in Amanda Township, to Homer John and Alvina (Basinger) Hilty, and they preceded him in death.

He was married to Doris June Burnfield for 62 years, and she preceded him in death in 2008.

He is survived by two children, Dorothy Alice Hilty May (Jim) of Columbus and David Dee Hilty (Cheryl) of Plymouth, Ind; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granchildren.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving mostly in the South Pacific before being injured and returned to the U.S. for rehabilitation, where he received his Purple Heart.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kermit Welty officiating. Burial will be held in the Spencerville Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Lima.
