John Anthony Bensman, 59
John Anthony Bensman, 59, of Russia Versailles Road in Russia, died suddenly at 2:34 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, of natural causes, at his home.
He was born on June 13, 1954, in Coldwater, to parents Mildred Mary (Gehret), who survives in Versailles, and Virgil John Bensman, who preceded him in death.
On Nov. 28, 1974, he married Marian Margaret (Holthaus) Bensman at St. Patrick Catholic Church in St. Patrick, and she survives.
He is also survived by three children, Ann (Chad) Delaet of Russia, Suzanne (Brad) Grilliot of Versailles and John E. Bensman of Osgood, seven grandchildren, Emma, Casey, Levi and Weston Delaet and Isaac, Taylor and Reed Grilliot, eight siblings, Shirley (Walter) Broering of St. Henry, Jerome (Marilyn) Bensman of Versailles, Irene (John) Bruns of Maria Stein, Mary Jane (Lester) Homan of New Bremen, Steve (Deborah) Bensman of Versailles, Theresa (Philip) Heitkamp of New Bremen, Marlene (Steven) Puthoff of Versailles and Carl (Kathy) Bensman of Versailles and a sister-in-law, Teresa (Bill) Gariety of Wapakoneta.
John is also survived by his father-in-law, Bernard Holthaus of McCartyville; sisters and brothers-in-law Rosie (Marvin) Albers of McCartyville; Bernard (Bobbie) Holthaus of Sidney; Dorothy Inman of Mesa, Ariz.; Marlene Overly of Duluth, Ga.; Carol (Larry) Voisard of Fort Loramie; Frederick Holthaus of Anna; Richard (Deb) Holthaus of Anna; Patricia (Mark) Wahl of Celina; Rita (Allen) Wente of Minster; Treva (Rick) Monnier of Tipp City; Mark (Sharon) Holthaus of Fort Loramie; William (Deb) Holthaus of Fort Loramie; Gerald Holthaus of Anna; Margaret (Jerry) Gepfrey of Anna and Robert Holthaus of Anna.
He was preceded in death by his father, by one brother, Michael Bensman, by his mother-in-law, Ruth Holthaus, his stepmother-in-law, Mary Langenkamp Holthaus and a sister-in-law, Ann Holthaus.
He was a member of St. Remy Catholic Church and was a past member of the St. Remy Knights of Columbus. He was also a Loramie Township Trustee.
John was the founding owner and operator of John Bensman Tree Trimming since 1982. Previously, he had been employed for 23 years at Clopay in Russia.
John enjoyed attending estate auctions and camping where tractors and other antiques might be for sale or just on display. He had a particular passion for collecting and rebuilding antique Case tractors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Remy Catholic Church in Russia, the Rev. Frank Amberger officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Remy Catholic Church Cemetery in Russia.
Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Gehret Funeral Home.
