Iona J. Berning, 80

Iona J. Berning, 80, of 415 W. Oliver St., St. Marys, died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the St. Marys Living Center.

She was born Oct. 15, 1932, in St. Marys, the daughter of Edgar and Lillian Henning.

She married Mathias Berning on June 25, 1955, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1974.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carla (Daniel) Kohnen of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Debra (Thomas) McKivison of Lima; by five grandchildren, Mathias, Benjamin, Margaret, John and Jamie; by five great-grandchildren, Holden, Sydney, Kaylee, Emerson and Allie; by two brothers, Edgar Henning of New Bremen and Paul Henning of St. Marys; by a sister, Ruth Griesdorn of St. Marys.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings Robert Henning, John Ward, Lester Ward, Helen Chiromente and Ida Deitsch.

Iona was a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. She retired from the Valley Nursing Home in St. Marys, where she had worked as a housekeeper.

Iona was very family-oriented and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed watching old movies and reading and she was a member of Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ in St. Marys.

Funeral rites will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Miller-Long and Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St., St. Marys, the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray, officiant.

Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where memorial gifts may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.
