HS Football Playoff Notebook: Minster lets players have say

MINSTER — High school football teams almost everywhere meet near the goalline after games in communal celebration or shared misery.

Usually the players take a knee and hear one voice — that of the head coach. Depending on the outcome, that speech is usually either irate or inspiring.

The Minster Wildcats take a different tact.

The Wildcats' smashmouth toughness on the field may be traditional, but Minster lets everyone share in the responsibility of talking after games  in a way that's pretty far from old school.

"We ask our players to give us comments, feedback after every practice," Minster head coach Nate Moore said. "So for us, it's just what we do. I think the kids really enjoy it. It gives them the opportunity to really take ownership of whatever happened, win or loss. For them to step up and talk about what went on."

Players get the chance to speak first. Assistant coaches then give their intake. Finally, head coach Nate Moore is the last guy to speak.

"I don't have to do all the talking," Moore said. "By the time it gets to me, the players have already talked, the assistant coaches have already talked, most of the things that need to be said can be said. I can just summarize and wrap things up."

"It's a family-style atmosphere," Moore added. "We look at these kids like our sons. I think the parents appreciate that."

Minster plays Fort Loramie on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Wapakoneta's Harmon Field in a Division VI regional semifinal  play game.
