Howard L. Henschen, 90, of 206 E. German St., New Knoxville, died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the St. Marys Living Center.
He was born on Nov. 12, 1922, in Shelby County, the son of Ferdinand and Lydia (Feldwisch) Henschen.
He married Glenna Jean Walls on April 22, 1944, and she survives at the St. Marys Living Center.
He is survived by his two daughters, Sharon (Rick) Tangeman of New Bremen and Susan (Dan) Stemen of Lima; by a sister, Melba Henschen of New Knoxville; by five grandchildren, Aaron Tangeman, Jennifer Stemen, Heather (Sandeep) Das, Pamela Stemen, Joy Stemen; by two great-grandchildren, Tyler Shawver and Connor Das.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by a sister, Grace Duncan; a brother, Lester Henshen.
Howard was a 1940 graduate of New Knoxville High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in St. Marys after 42 years of service.
He was a member of Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen, where he had served as a Deacon, Elder and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and was a big sports fan, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. He served as mayor of New Knoxville for 10 years.
Funeral rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen, the Rev. Dean Greenwood and Tom Sager, officiants.
Burial will follow at Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Faith Alliance Church, where memorial gifts may be given to the Gideons of Disabled American Veterans.
