Already crowned as the Auglaize County League champions in the regular season standings, the New Knoxville Rangers added a little more hardware to their trophy case this week in 1962 by winning the Auglaize County League post-season tournament with a 62-48 victory over Waynesfield.  Despite the outcome, both teams advanced to the sectional tournament the following week at the Celina Fieldhouse.  The Rangers jumped out to a 16-11 lead at the end of the first period and kept the margin intact at halftime, leading 33-28.  They continued to keep pace throughout the second half and eventually held on for the five-point win.  Elshoff led the Rangers with 19 points, while Steve Kruse and Lee Katterheinrich added 16 and 15 points respectively, in the victory which pushed their team to 17-4 overall.

Twenty-five years ago this week in 1987, the Minster Wildcats ended their girl’s basketball season on a high note with a 54-32 victory over the Mendon-Union Pirates in Minster, finishing their year 2-7 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.  Jody Hemmelgarn led the Wildcats with a game-high 17 points, while Amy Cordonnier added 12 and Leslie Moorman ten in the 22-point victory.  After leading 11-6 at the end of the first period, the Orange and Black extended their advantage to 21-13 at the conclusion of the first half.  They put the contest away in the third quarter by out-scoring the Pirates 14-4 and finished them off with a 19-point outburst in the closing eight minutes of action.

In a season where the St. Marys Roughriders struggled to a final record of 6-14 overall, they ended things on the exciting side with a 51-49 edging of the Defiance Bulldogs.  The Western Buckeye League win capped off three straight victories to conclude the 2001-2002 winter season for the Blue and Gold boys.  The ‘Riders trailed by three points at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Defiance 10-5 to take a 21-19 command at intermission.  Despite an 11-0 run by Defiance in the middle of the third period, the Roughriders shook it off with an 8-2 spurt of their own and trailed by just three points at the end of the third stanza.  The ‘Riders enjoyed their most productive offensive quarter of the game in the closing minutes by out-scoring Defiance 20-15 to secure the two-point victory.  In the win, Stephen Kill finished with 15 points, while Matt Steinke added 11 counters.
