Hey, I Remember That!: A look back at local sports this week 10, 25 and 50 years ago

December 22, 2011

50 Years Ago This Week – 1961
Just before the Christmas break shut down most local basketball teams for the holiday season, the Minster Wildcats added one final victory to improve to 5-2 on the season.  In their 70-50 blowout over the Waynesfield Tigers, the Orange and Black also notched their second win in the county basketball slate to improve to 2-3 in the league standings.  Jan Frericks paced the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points, while Dennis Hemmelgarn added 13 counters in the victory.  The Wildcats were also triumphant in the junior varsity contest by a final tally of 44-34.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1986
In girls’ basketball action 25 years ago this week, the New Bremen Cardinals moved to 4-1 on the season with an easy 55-35 victory over the Minster Wildcats in New Bremen.  After holding just a four-point lead at intermission, the Cardinals stomped ahead 29-13 in the second half to send the Wildcats home with the 20-point defeat.  While the Red and Gold shot just 34 percent from the floor, they were powered by their play on the boards, where they out-rebounded their rivals 42-25.  Heidi Hoehne was New Bremen’s scoring leader with 18 points, with Karen Heitkamp adding ten points in the winning cause.  With the win, the Cardinals moved to 2-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference, while Minster slipped to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2001
After patiently waiting for the previous couple of weeks, the St. Marys Roughriders finally picked up their first victory of the boys’ basketball season after they bettered the New Bremen Cardinals 67-60 in New Bremen.  Things looked to be going the same as they recently had for the Roughriders when the Cardinals grabbed a 26-19 advantage at the halftime break.  Whatever speech head coach Josh Leslie gave in the locker room seemingly worked to perfection, as the Blue and Gold fired out to a 26-7 edge in the third period to lead by 12 points heading into the final eight minutes.  The Cardinals answered with 17 points in the closing quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Roughriders held on to secure their first victory of the 2001-2002 winter season.
