Hey, I Remember That!: A look back at area sports 50 and 25 years ago

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

This week in 1962, the St. Marys Lakers hosted the Botkins baseball club in non-Western Ohio League action at Memorial Field.

The Lakers plated a pair of runs in the home-half of the second inning, only to have Botkins respond with two of their own runs in the top half of the third frame.  All the home team needed was a solid appearance at the dish in their half of the third inning, as they picked up three runs before holding the 5-2 margin through the end of the game.

Chuck Huwer ignited the go-ahead inning by reaching base on a throwing error.  Don McGue and Roger Hegemier also made it to base safely before Huwer scored on another fielding error by Botkins.

Mike Westbay then helped himself by driving in both McGue and Hegemier with a long double to put his team in front by the three-run margin.

Westbay went the distance on the mound and struck out 11 while walking just four in the victory.  At the plate, Cal Caywood led St. Marys with two base hits.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

Twenty-five years ago this week, St. Marys’ 10-year-old all-star baseball squad vaulted into the finals of the Celina Little League tournament.

St. Marys opened the eventful day with a 17-4 blasting over Rockford with Joel Johns notching the win from the pitcher’s mound.

Andy Dennings, Ted Liette, and Matt Craft each had a pair of hits for St. Marys to lead the offensive charge, while Jeremy Metzger, Kurt Bubp, Matt Triplett, and Jeff Clausing all added a single base hit to the winning effort.

In the second game, they added a 16-9 victory over Celina to their list, as Metzger earned the win from the pitching rubber.

Ted Liette paced the offense in that win with three base hits, while Matt Rain, Chad Bonifas, and Craft all contributed a pair of hits to the victory.

In the final battle of the afternoon, St. Marys got by Convoy Crestview by a final of  7-2.

Matt Rain picked up the pitching win, while Liette continued his offensive prowess with three more hits.
