50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Lakers jumped on top of the St. Marys Legion baseball team early before eventually holding them off for what became a 12-10 victory at Memorial Field in St. Marys.

Earlier in the season, the Lakers let a late-game lead against the Legion slip from their hands, but this time around they held on for the win.

The Lakers popped the cork in the third inning with four runs and added six more through the fifth inning.

Although the Legion managed three runs of their own, things stayed rather quiet until the top of the seventh and eighth innings when the Legion plated six.

Clinging to a 10-9 advantage, the Lakers scored two in their half of the eighth, and although the Legion trimmed their deficit to two runs in their final at-bat, it wasn’t enough as the Lakers rolled on to the hard-earned victory.

Tom Yingling smacked a pair of triples and a double in five plate appearances for the Lakers, while knocking in four runs and scoring a pair.

Cole Willoughby added a double and a single to the hitting barrage, while Junior Place boomed a pair of triples.

For the Legion, Mark Froning connected for three base hits, while Ted Keysor and Mike Westbay each had a pair of singles in the loss.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

This week in 1987, the St. Marys 11-and-under all-star baseball team fell in the Pizza Hut Classic tournament in Celina with a 15-13 loss to Elida.

Powered by six runs in the first inning and five more in the second, Elida put St. Marys in a precarious spot from the start.

St. Marys fought back with five runs in both the third and fifth innings, but the damage had already been inflicted, as they fell by two runs in the end.

Tony Hirschfeld led St. Marys with a triple and two singles.  Mike Langenkamp added a double and two singles, while Jeremy Metzger, Andy Maher, and Chad Tester all connected for two singles in their final game.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

The St. Marys Legion baseball witnessed their season come to an end just one win shy from advancing to the state tournament in Athens  after falling to St. Henry Legion 17-6 in the District 2 championship contest.

St. Henry held St. Marys scoreless in the first inning and went on to score five in their half of the opening frame.

St. Marys managed a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning, but St. Henry blew out in front 13-1 by the time their end of the inning was complete.

St. Marys refused to go away though and plated a couple of more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

St. Henry slammed the door shut though in the bottom half of the sixth when they scored four more runs to pull ahead 17-5.

St. Marys catcher Scott Schultze blasted a home run in the top of the seventh for the final run of the game, but St. Marys eventually ended their campaign with a 12-9 overall record.
