Anytime you head to the Vatican at Delphos St. John’s High School, the odds of leaving with a victory in boys’ basketball aren’t very good. This week in 2002, the Minster Wildcats made the journey north on State Route 66 to square off against the Blue Jays, who were 5-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference at the time. After trailing 12-10 following one quarter of play, the Wildcats shaved a point off of their deficit and were behind 20-19 at intermission. Mike Lee’s crew outscored the home team 16-10 in the third stanza, and with eight minutes to play, they were in charge, 35-30. The Blue Jays rallied a little in the final period, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Wildcats returned to Auglaize County with the 42-40 win. Point guard Jonathan Piening led the Minster attack with 12 points, while Dane Sommer added ten more in the win which pushed their team to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.
