HEY, I REMEMBER THAT!: A look back at area sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago
25 Years Ago This Week – 1987
This week in 1987, Mike Kiehl’s St. Marys Roughriders concluded their regular season with a 68-57 victory over the Parkway Panthers. The Roughriders got down to business immediately after the opening tip and thumped the Panthers 20-8 in the opening eight minutes. Things played out a little more even in the second quarter, but St. Marys still managed to break for intermission in front, 35-22.
Although Parkway continued to play strong, the first-quarter woes proved to be too much in the second half, and the teams moved into the last quarter with the ‘Riders still in charge, 51-37. The Panthers outscored St. Marys 20-17 in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough as the Roughriders went on to post the 11-point victory.
Junior Troy Crouch lit the scoreboards up with 24 points in the victory, while Mike Dietz and Mike Trogdlon contributed 11 and ten points respectively. With the victory, the Roughriders closed the regular season 8-12 overall and were set to open the sectional tournament the following week against Coldwater at the Elida Fieldhouse.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
A week after winning the Auglaize County tournament and two weeks removed from being crowned as the 1962 Auglaize County champions, the New Knoxville Rangers opened their sectional tournament trek at the Celina Fieldhouse against the Coldwater Cavaliers. The first quarter was back-and-forth with four ties and six lead changes which resulted in an 18-18 tie on the scoreboard.
The Cavaliers cracked things open in the second stanza - pulling in front by ten points. Despite trailing by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, the Rangers trimmed their deficit to eight and went into the last stanza trailing 55-47. Although they pulled to within three points on a couple of occasions, the Rangers ran out of gas near the end, before one final burst pulled them to within a bucket. That is as close as they made it however; as the Cavaliers recorded the 61-59 victory.
The Rangers, who finished the season 17-5, were led in scoring by Katterheinrich and Elshoff with 18 and 15 points respectively.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2002
It was time for the ‘second season’ to begin and for the New Bremen Cardinals and New Knoxville Rangers, it meant kicking off early March in the Division IV Sectional tournament at Coldwater High School. The Rangers fired out of the blocks and led 10-5 after the initial eight minutes, but then the Cardinals rallied and pulled to within a point at halftime. The Rangers edged back in front by two points at the end of the third quarter and then extended their lead to six points in the closing minutes before eliminating the Cardinals with a 37-31 defeat.
