25 Years Ago This Week – 1987
Following a pair of six-point wins over the Minster Wildcats during the regular season, the New Bremen Cardinals prepared for their third meeting with their rivals in the 1986-87 boys’ sectional tournament. Craig Griesdorn’s crew pulled in front 14-8 in the opening minutes before leading by nine points at the end of the first half. The third quarter was a shootout with the Cardinals out-scoring the Orange and Black 19-18, before blowing it open in the final eight minutes to record the 75-54 victory in Rockford. Cory Schroer and Tony Ritter teamed up and combined for 43 points in the victory, with Schroer nailing 22 and Ritter 21. For the Wildcats, Scott Larger and Charlie Ernst were the only two scorers in double-digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Wildcats ended their campaign at 8-13 overall, while the Cardinals improved to 12-9 on the campaign with a sectional final date set against the Fort Recovery Indians a couple of nights later.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2002
Mike Lee’s Minster Wildcats invaded Wapakoneta High School gymnasium in the district tournament opener ten years ago this week with a date against the Upper Scioto Valley Rams. Despite poor shooting in the early minutes of the battle (2-17 from the field), the Wildcats managed to grasp an 11-10 edge at the end of the first quarter before extending it to a seven-point command at the halftime break. The Rams bettered the Orange and Black on the scoreboard in the third stanza 13-11, but Minster rolled on to the 59-47 victory which pushed them into the district final a couple of evenings later. Dustin Sommer was explosive in the triumph with 27 points, while David Patch contributed 16 in the winning effort, which pushed them to 18-4 overall on the season.
50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
The 1961-62 winter athletic season was officially complete this week. With area teams not advancing deep into the basketball post-season, and the spring sports season yet to get underway, there were no happenings in local sports fifty years ago this week.
