Hey, I Remember That: A Look Back At Area Sports 10, 25 and 50 Years Ago

December 20, 2012

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

This week in 1962, the New Knoxville Rangers notched their first Auglaize County League victory of the season with their 62-48 upending of Cridersville.  The first minutes of the game were played on an even keel with the Rangers holding a 10-9 edge before pulling in command by six points at 26-20 at halftime.  New Knoxville opened things up considerably in the third quarter by outscoring their opponent 19-9 with one period left to play, and managed to maintain their lead for the 14-point triumph.  The Rangers were paced in the scoring column by four individuals in double-digits including Wietholter with 17 and Henschen, Howe, and Kruse with 12 points apiece.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

Twenty-five years ago this week, the New Bremen Cardinals fell to the Class A defending state champion Fort Loramie Redskins in a battle that New Bremen head coach Craig Griesdorn classified as ‘200 percent’ better than his teams’ play against Minster in the previous game.  Although the Red and Gold fell by the 16-point margin, it proved to be only one sub-par quarter that doomed the Cards.  After trailing just 13-11 following the first eight minutes of play, the Cardinals were behind by 11 when the teams headed to the locker room at halftime and never really recovered.  The Redskins out-scored the Cardinals by five the entire second half, as New Bremen dropped to 2-5 on the year.  Jeff Paul and Todd Busse each tallied 12 points in the loss, while future Ohio State Buckeye Tom Brandewie led all scorers with 26 points for Fort Loramie.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

Powered by a strong presence in the paint, the St. Marys Roughriders pounded their way to a 56-44 victory over the Wapakoneta Redskins ten years ago this week in 2002.  Matt Steinke led the way on the scoreboard for the Riders with 19 points in the game, 11 of which came in the second half.  The win improved the Blue and Gold to 3-3 overall, and it was their first Western Buckeye League game of the season as they started 1-0 in conference play.
