Hey, I Remember That!: A Look Back At Area Sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Roughriders tipped off boys basketball season with a 55-34 victory over Greenville.

As both teams seemed plagued by season-opening jitters and ice-cold shooting, Greenville led after the first quarter, 8-7 only to have St. Marys out-score them 14-2 in the second period to take a 21-10 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Blue and Gold methodically extended their lead in the second half before pulling away with the 22-point victory.  Denny Brown and Jim Dabbelt led the Riders with 13 points apiece in the win, while Dave Brown added 11 counters against the Green Wave.

The St. Marys junior varsity team also opened their season, but unfortunately were not on the winning end.  It was a tight match throughout, as a game-winning shot at the buzzer by Ralph Hecht skidded off the rim, and St. Marys fell by a final of 30-29.

 25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

This week in 1987, head coach Ed Snyder’s Minster Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 60-53 win over the Houston Wildcats in Minster.

Powered by an effective zone defense and superb shooting from the charity stripe, Minster shook off an eight-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to send Houston home with a loss.

Minster trailed 18-10 heading into the second quarter, but responded by outscoring the visitors 23-14 to take the one-point lead at halftime.  The two squads played even in the third stanza, and with eight minutes left in the game, Minster clung to a 45-44 lead.

Aided by a streak of eight consecutive free throws in the closing quarter, Minster held on for the seven-point win.

In all, the Orange and Black connected on 20 of 29 from the charity stripe and committed only eight turnovers, compared to 16 miscues by Houston.

Rick Fortman led Minster in the scoring column with 20 points with Charlie Ernst adding 16 in the victory, while Kevin Prenger chipped in 14.

Minster also captured the victory in the junior varsity contest, 71-69 in double-overtime, after rallying from ten points down in the fourth quarter before eventually pulling out the win.  Doug Rutschilling led the ‘Cats with 23 points, with Ben Ernst contributing 11 counters in the victory.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

This week in 2002, the New Knoxville Lady Rangers picked up their first girls basketball win of the season with a 56-44 victory over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers.

The Rangers started things off by grabbing a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter before heading to the locker room still in front by three points, 29-26.

The Tigers pulled to within a point early in the third quarter, but the Rangers sprinted to an 11-1 run and led 42-31 at the end of the third quarter.

Although they played even throughout the fourth period, the home never recovered from New Knoxville’s third quarter run.

Katie Piening led the Rangers with 12 points in the victory, as her team moved to 1-2 on the season.
