50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, New Bremen’s Western Ohio Pony League baseball team concluded their remarkable season with an overall record of 20-3.

They closed the campaign with a 7-0 victory over Fort Loramie at the post-season tournament championship in Botkins.  Dean Harlamert tossed a six-hit shutout for New Bremen, while earning his tenth victory of the season from the hill.

Although the Cardinals managed to connect for just six base hits in the victory, they took advantage of several Fort Loramie errors, while also utilizing solid base-running and timely base hits.

New Bremen scored their initial run in the bottom of the first inning while adding three more scores in both the third and sixth frames.

Jim Schwartz led the Cardinals at the plate with a pair of singles, while his squad won their 15th game in a row.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

Football season was finally underway 25 years ago this week, as the New Bremen Cardinals opened their new campaign with a 37-0 pasting over the Ridgemont Golden Gophers.

Powered on the offensive side by touchdowns from four different players, the New Bremen defense was also in on the fun as they allowed the Gophers into their territory just once during the course of the game.

The Cardinals logged all of their points in the first half with quarterback Jeff Paul running in the first score from nine yards out.

Bob Heitkamp put his team up 13 later in the period with a 24-yard touchdown reception from Paul, while Cory Schroer’s second PAT put New Bremen in command by 14.

The visitors blew things wide open in the second quarter with three touchdowns, including two touchdown receptions by Chad Williams, a 51-yard run from Jeff Valentine, and a 36-yard field goal by Schroer.  After finishing the season 6-4 in 1986, the New Bremen faithful had high hopes for what was ahead in the new season.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

Ten years ago this week, the New Bremen Cardinals tangled with the Coldwater Cavaliers and nearly pulled off the upset, but unfortunately fell short by a final of 14-7 in Midwest Athletic Conference football action in Coldwater.

The Cardinals notched the only touchdown of the first quarter when, with less than a minute to play, Jeff Thobe’s six-yard touchdown run put his team in front by six with Nick Wente’s extra point extending their lead to 7-0.  Coldwater answered with a touchdown of their own just before halftime, and the two teams commenced to the locker room with the score knotted at seven points apiece.

The only scoring for the remainder of the game was a touchdown run from Coldwater in the third quarter.  Despite out-gaining the Cavs in total offense and first downs, the Red and Gold couldn’t overcome their deficit and dropped to 0-1 in the initial MAC contest of the 2002 campaign.
