50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Lakers, in battle against both Fort Recovery and Mother Nature, plunked the Indians 13-5 in Western Ohio League baseball action. In between downpours of rain at Memorial Field, the Lakers unleashed a 16-hit barrage, while Don McGue went the distance on the mound for the victory. Trailing 1-0 heading into the home-half of the first inning, the Lakers plated five runs in the first, only to witness Fort Recovery pull to within a run a few innings later. Things remained calm until the sixth and seventh frames when the Lakers plated eight runs to solidify the easy win. McGue and Lynn Cisco each blasted home runs in the triumph, while Dick Hollman smacked two doubles. With the win, the Lakers improved to 4-9 on the season and 2-5 in the Western Ohio League standings.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1987
This week in 1987, the Minster Wildcats advanced to the Auglaize County ACME finals with a 7-2 victory over the St. Marys Roughriders. St. Marys jumped ahead at the start when Keith Puschell led off with a single and later scored when Bryan Niemeyer was charged with a balk. The Wildcats scored the go-ahead run in their half of the first when Ben Ernst singled and soon scored following a passed ball and an error. Later on, Rex Mescher scored after drawing a walk and scoring on a double by Mark Wiss. St. Marys only other run came in the fourth inning when Mike Suchland scored following Greg Keith’s double to centerfield. In the bottom of the fourth, Minster blew things open by plating five runs to push ahead for the five-run victory. Niemeyer worked the mound the entire game for the Wildcats and allowed just two runs on six base hits while walking two and striking out five.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2002
In the elimination game of the 2002 ACME tournament in New Bremen, the St. Marys Roughriders bettered the Minster Wildcats by a final of 5-3. The Wildcats got things stirred up in the bottom of the first when Ty Parks and Alex Bernhold each crossed home plate to put their team in charge. The Roughriders answered with three of their own runs in the second inning when John Pfeffenberger and Wes Clark each scored after reaching on a pair of singles. Matt Helmstetter added their last score of the frame after reaching base on a walk. The ‘Riders picked up their final two runs in the fourth when Pfeffenberger got things started with a single, followed by Matt Steinke’s double. After issuing a walk to Clark, the Wildcats changed pitchers and Helmstetter teed off on Tom Kuhn for a two-run double to centerfield. The Wildcats pulled to within a run in their half of the fourth when Scott Sherman scored on an error. With the win, the Roughriders advanced to square off against the Wapakoneta Redskins for a chance at the county title, while Minster was eliminated from the tournament.
