Hey, I Remember That!: A Look Back at Area Sports 10, 25 and 50 Year Ago
50 Years Ago This Week – 1963
This week in 1963, it was Mother’s Appreciation Night in St. Marys, as the Roughriders tangled with the Van Wert Cougars. When the dust settled, the ‘Riders were on the winning side of the 61-46 final. The Roughriders managed to slide in front 15-14 at the conclusion of the first quarter before doubling their opponent’s offensive output in the second stanza, 18-9. Holding their 33-23 lead at the onset of the third quarter, Denny Krauss got things underway with a beautiful jump shot and his team eventually extended their advantage by another bucket and led 44-32 with one quarter remaining in the contest. The game was never in doubt in the closing minutes as the ‘Riders were in front by as many as 20 points. Coach Taylor began to substitute through the period, and St. Marys went on to post the 15-point victory. Kraus led his team in the scoring column with 17 points, while Tom Walter and Jim Dabbelt added 16 and 12 points respectively.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1988
Twenty-five years ago this week, the Minster Wildcats entertained the Botkins Trojans in non-league boys basketball action in a battle that rained three-point shots from start to finish. Both teams were plagued by cold shooting in the opening period, but that didn’t hinder their effort as the two squads combined for nearly 50 shot attempts, only to have the Wildcats hold a 14-13 edge at the end of the quarter. Although the Trojans gained the lead midway through the second period, a barrage of three-pointers by Charlie Ernst and James Wolf helped to put the home team in front by as many as eight points, only to have it dwindle to three at intermission. The third quarter and much of the fourth was a tight game with several lead changes, but the Wildcats began to seal things in the closing 30 seconds when Ben Ernst drained a couple of free throws to put his team up by four. Botkins connected for the final shot of the game, but it wasn’t enough as the Orange and Black picked up the 53-51 victory. Charlie Ernst led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Wolf added 14 in the battle that was highlighted with 39 three-point attempts between the two teams.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2003
This week in 2003, the 6-7 New Knoxville Rangers hosted the 11-1 St. Henry Redskins in a Midwest Athletic Conference boy’s basketball encounter. Things didn’t look promising for the home team in the opening period, as the Redskins shot out to an 18-9 advantage in the opening eight minutes. Refusing to fold, the Rangers chipped away at their deficit and eventually tied things up at 29 as the two teams trotted to the locker room to discuss things over before the second half of action. Dustin Kruse drilled a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the third quarter, and it was all New Knoxville from there, as they took a seven-point advantage into the final quarter. The Rangers continued to take advantage of St. Henry’s missed shots by countering with timely buckets of their own to roll to the 66-49 victory. Marcus Borgerding and John Henschen spearheaded the Rangers with 18 points apiece, while freshman Dustin Kruse added 17 points in the winning effort.
