50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders traveled north to Columbus Grove for a quad-meet in track and field with the host Bulldogs, along with Leipsic and the junior varsity team from Lima High School. When scores rolled in at the end of the evening, the Roughriders finished in second place with 65.1 points – 11.9 behind Columbus Grove. It was noted that the most excitement of the night unfolded during the mile relay. Following the first leg, the competition was between Lima and St. Marys and remained so until the final 60 yards when Paul Dzalmanow pulled in front to give the Roughriders the victory in the event. Other winners for the Riders included Rex Hile in the broad jump and 220-yard dash and Allyn Kohlhorst in the half-mile run. Denny Brown placed second in the pole vault, but his leap of 10-9 broke the high school record at Memorial.
25 Years Ago This Week – 1987
This week in 1987, the New Bremen Cardinals traveled to New Knoxville and locked horns with the Rangers on the baseball diamond. The Cardinals exploded for five runs in the first inning and from that point on, the contest was never in doubt. They piled up single runs in the third and fourth innings, while adding three more to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. From the mound, junior Cory Schroer was nearly untouchable as he hurled a no-hitter heading into the bottom of the seventh. His only blemish of the game to that point was a walk he issued in the third, but other than that, the ball left the infield only once to that point. New Knoxville’s Terry Clune led the seventh off with a missile up the gut of the infield. The Cardinal second baseman lunged toward it, but the ball skimmed right past his outstretched glove. It was the only hit of the night for the Rangers, who fell by a final of 10-1. The Cardinals were led at the plate by Andy Fledderjohann, who was three-for-three with two singles and a double, while Brian Trego added three singles in the victory.
10 Years Ago This Week – 2002
This week in 2002, the St. Marys baseball team improved to 14-5 overall and stayed perfect in the Western Buckeye League at 5-0 with a 6-5 victory in a thriller over Lima Bath at K.C. Geiger Park. The Riders jumped in front 5-1 and were seemingly on their way toward the easy victory, but a furious rally by Bath made things interesting as the game was knotted at 5-5 after four innings. Todd Graves led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to deep left field. pinch runner John Douglassadvanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Ken Williams and soon scored on a sacrifice fly to center field from Curt Behr. The Roughriders maintained the one-run lead for another inning to secure the win.
