50 Years Ago This Week – 1963

Fifty years ago this week in 1963, the Minster Wildcats hosted the Waynesfield Tigers in boys basketball action.  The battle was airtight throughout, but the visitors eventually got the better of the Wildcats in the closing minutes and left town with a 61-54 victory.  The teams met earlier in the season with the Wildcats falling by 20 points, but this contest was much closer and more spirited, as the Orange and Black nearly pulled off the upset.  The Tigers and Wildcats played to a 12-12 tie following the first period of action and stayed in a stalemate at halftime, 26-26.  The Wildcats slid in front by one point in the closing minutes of the third period as the two Auglaize County League foes bounced to the final stanza with the home team in front, 40-39.  With less than four minutes to play in the game, the Tigers pulled in front by four points, but a pair of free throws from Charley Clune pulled his team to within two.  The Wildcats went to a man-to-man defense, but it didn’t seem to faze the Tigers as they scored four quick points to take back command by six.  Waynesfield eventually sealed the victory at the charity stripe, where they connected on 13 of 18 for the contest and left town with the seven-point win.  Clune led the Wildcats in the loss with 19 points, while Bob Huelsman and Ken Enneking added ten apiece.

 25 Years Ago This Week – 1988

This week in 1988, the St. Marys Roughriders hosted the Elida Bulldogs on the hardwood.  Although it was a close game throughout, the Roughriders slipped in overtime, falling to 6-6 on the year with their fourth straight defeat.  Through the first four quarters of play, the Bulldogs and Roughriders fought to a 42-42 tie, but the Bulldogs came to life in the overtime period and outscored the home team 16-9 to secure the league win.  Mike Dietz paced the Roughriders with 15 points in the loss, while Todd Grimm contributed ten points.  In the reserve contest, St. Marys pulled out the 38-32 victory with Andrew Menker leading the attack with 13 points, while Scott Glass added 12 counters.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003

Ten years ago this week in 2003, the New Bremen Lady Cardinals went on the road to Shelby County and left their meeting with Jackson Center with a 45-39 victory in tow, improving to 5-7 on the season.  The Cardinals jumped ahead to a 13-10 lead at the halftime break before holding a 26-22 advantage at intermission.  In a low-scoring third quarter, the Tigers cut their deficit by a point after out-dueling the Cardinals 8-7, only to have New Bremen return the favor in the fourth period to record the six-point triumph in a battle.  Despite being edged 29-21 in rebounding and the contest being marred by 47 total turnovers, the Cardinals did the damage where it was most important – on the scoreboard.  New Bremen inflicted Jackson Center with a steady dose of scoring as Sarah Storrer, Liz Hartwig, and Kacie Schmiesing each tallied ten points in the victory.
