December 28, 2012

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

Fifty years ago this week, the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders notched their third straight win in boys basketball with a 64-51 victory over the Crestview Knights in non-league action on the hardwood.  Despite picking up three fouls in the first quarter, Denny Brown managed to pace the Roughriders in the scoring column with a game-high 17 points.  St. Marys jumped in front 9-2 at the onset of the game and led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter before extending their command to 38-23 at intermission.  The Roughriders maintained their edge in the second half as they improved to 4-3 on the regular season with the 13-point victory.  Joining Denny Brown in double-digits was Dave Brown with 13 points and Jim Dabbelt with 12 counters.  The ‘Riders fell in the junior varsity contest by a final of 44-41.

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

This week in girls basketball action in 1987, the New Bremen Lady Cardinals upped their record to 4-2 on the young season with a 52-37 non-league win over the Sidney Lehman Cavaliers in Sidney.  The Red and Gold led at all stops including 10-6 after the first period and 23-17 at halftime.  They managed to extend their advantage in the third quarter to 13 points, before leaving Shelby County with the 15-point triumph.  Ellen Ziegenbusch led three Cardinals in double-digits with 16 points, while Lynn Gagel tallied 13 points and Karen Brooks contributed ten to the winning effort.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

Ten years ago this week in 2002, it was a sluggish start on the basketball floor for the New Knoxville boys, but they eventually pulled through with a 56-52 win over the Spencerville Bearcats.  Things looked well in hand for the Rangers, who improved to 3-3 with the win, heading into the final quarter as they held a comfortable 40-32 lead.  Late in the final eight minutes though, the Bearcats turned up the heat defensively, while drilling some crucial shots to pull to within two points at 47-45.  Timely free throw shooting and strong floor play by New Knoxville’s Marcus Borgerding and Trent Fledderjohann sealed the deal though, as the Rangers held on for the four-point victory.  Borgerding finished the win with a team-high 19 points.
