Harold L. Suchland, 90, of 9 Haarbye St., New Bremen, died at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at the St. Marys Living Center.
He was born on June 11, 1921, in St. Marys, the son of Rueben and Maude (Dowden) Suchland, and they preceded him in death.
On Oct. 18, 1942, he married Helen E. Menchhofer, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 2008.
He is survived by his children, Harold E. and Barbara Suchland, Jim and Shirley Suchland, Mike and Janet Suchland, all of New Bremen, and Tom and Carol Suchland of North Pole, Alaska; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren with two on the way.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl Suchland Sr., Kenneth Suchland, Karl Suchland; his sister, Dorothy Suchland; his half sisters, Margaret Spaulding and Leona Hegaman.
Mr. Suchland was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in St. Marys, where he served on the church council for a number of years and had served as council president for four years.
He served in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II with the U.S. Army.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 241 of New Bremen, of which he had been a member for 66 years. He, along with his wife Helen, owned and operated the former Suchland’s Flowers and Greenhouse in New Bremen, and he had retired from the Goodyear of St. Marys where he had been a supervisor. He enjoyed camping over the years and also hunting and fishing.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in St. Marys, with the Rev. William Maki officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys, with full military honors by the American Legion Post 241.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and one hour before services Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to either the church memorial fund, to the American Legion Post 241 or to the New Bremen Emergency Squad.
