Harold “Gene” Hunsaker, 77, of 04249 Frahm Pike, rural Celina, died at 10:40 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1934, in Celina, to John J. and Nevilla (Apgar) Hunsaker, and they preceded him in death.
On July 3, 1952, in St. Marys, he married Helen E. “Sis” Bowers, and she survives.
He is also survived by a son, Greg Hunsaker of Van Wert; a daughter, Peggy (Gilbert) Cotrell of St. Marys; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Esther Moser of Lima, Nellie Hamilton of Mendon, June Clutter of Rockford, Evelyn (George) Chiles of St. Marys, Wanda Miller of New Bremen, Helen (Kenny) Eckhart of St. Marys and Juanita Dalrymple of Lima.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Ann Hunsaker; a son, Steven Wayne Hunsaker; a brother, John Hunsaker Jr.; a sister, Mary Sawmiller.
He was a 1952 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in St. Marys. While at Goodyear, Gene held various positions with the United Rubber Workers Union Local No. 200, including 16 years as its president and was also appointed to its international executive board. Gene’s passion for helping people later continued as was appointed as a regional staff representative on the international board.
He was well-respected by both labor and management and known as a peace-keeper and deal-maker to all.
His favorite pastimes included woodworking, fishing, camping, traveling and watching old, classic movies. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends.
Rites are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel), St. Marys, with the Rev. Andrew Atkins officiating. Private family burial will take place at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.
Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Monday at the funeral home.
