Harold E. Hesse, 89

Harold E. Hesse, 89, of Spencerville, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Van Wert Community Hospice Center, with his son and daughter at his side.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1923, in Mendon, the son of Ralph Ernest and Ethel Mae Shank Hesse, who preceded him in death.

He had been married to Verna M. Rasberry, who survives in St. Marys. On April 23, 1977, he married Vivian Kay Grear, who died on June 24, 2008.

Surviving are four children, Chery Lynn Hesse of Mendon, David H. (Lois) Hesse of Riverside, Calif.; Karen Sue (Jeff) Getman of Hamilton, Mont.; and J. Allen (Sandy) Hesse of Mendon; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter.

His six-year-old son, Steven Glenn Hesse died on Aug. 30, 1968.

Harold was an Army veteran of World War II, serving five years, three of which were spent in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, the Rev. John G. Medaugh, officiating.

Military rites will follow by Spencerville Veterans.

Burial will be held at a later date in the Spencerville Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that Memorial Contributions be made to the VFW or American Legion Posts or to the Van Wert Hospice.
