Group To Serve Up Pasta

April 11, 2012

ST. MARYS — Residents looking for something to do on Saturday can stop by a local school for food and entertainment as part of an annual fundraiser for the area’s young musicians.

The St. Marys Band Parents Organization is holding its annual Italian Night on Saturday.

The event will be from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, with attendees dining on lasagna, applesauce or tossed salad, garlic bread, corn or green beans, drink and dessert.

“We’ll be serving in the Memorial High School Commons,” St. Marys Director of Bands Dane Newlove said. “Tickets will be sold at the door.”

Tickets will be $6 for adults and $5 for children under 12 and senior citizens. It will cover the meal and entertainment.

“We’ll have performances by the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade bands and both high school jazz bands,” Newlove said. “The performances will be in the auditorium. Every half hour, there will be a different group that performs.”

The sixth-grade band will play at 5 p.m., followed by the seventh-grade band at 5:30 p.m., the eighth-grade band at 6 p.m., Memorial High School jazz band II at 6:30 p.m. and Memorial High School jazz band I at 7 p.m.

“We’ll have some small ensembles from the high school band that will perform in between the groups,” Newlove added.

The Italian-themed dinner has gone on for years.

“We’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember,” said Becky Anderson with the St. Marys Bands.

She added the dinner has featured spaghetti in the past, as well as this year’s feature meal of lasagna.

“The Italian Night has went on in various forms for many, many years,” Newlove added. “It’s an annual fundraiser by the Band Parents Organization.”

Anderson noted the St. Marys Band Parents Organization mans the entire event.

“They’ll start preparing the lasagna — they usually put it together the Friday after school,” Anderson said. “Once it’s ready, they’ll come in early on Saturday and bake it.”

She noted the desserts are donated by the parents of the sixth, seventh and eighth-grade bands, which are brought in on Saturday.

Saturday’s Italian Night will also feature a 50/50 drawing, with tickets being sold throughout the evening. The winner will be announced at approximately 7 p.m. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the band program of the St. Marys City Schools.
