GOLF: Guarnieri wins Dr Pepper Championship

Dominic Guarnieri defeated Michael Schmitmeyer in the Dr Pepper Championship.

LIMA — Dominic Guarnieri won the match-play battle of St. Marys natives and University of Findlay grads to capture the Dr Pepper Championship golf title at Hawthorne Hills in Lima on Sunday.

Guarnieri, a former St. Marys standout and Roughrider varsity golf coach, defeated former St. Marys state qualifier and University of Findlay golfer Michael Schmitmeyer 4 and 3 in the championship match.

Guarnieri  birdied three straight holes to start the back nine to earn his second Dr. Pepper  title and his first in five years.

Schmitmeyer advanced to the title match with a four-under round in a semifinal win over Lima Central Catholic’s Josh Klaus.

Guarnieri advanced to the finals with a win over Kyle Weisenburger, 4 and 3.
