GLSCL Baseball: Timm's homer snaps Mariners' skid

July 16, 2012

CELINA — The Lexington Hustlers grabbed a lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday.

Grand Lake fought back with four runs of its own, including a game-winning home run.

Michael Timm’s two-run homer proved to be the difference as the Mariners ended a three-game losing streak with a 7-5 seven-inning victory over the Hustlers at Jim Hoess Field.

After Kyle Haen’s RBI triple and Cody Meyer’s game-tying single, Wright State’s Timm launched his second home run of the summer over the fence to give the Mariners a 7-5 lead.

Will Schierholz pitched two and one-third innings of scoreless relief for the Mariners to earn the win. He struck out three without walking anyone after taking over for starter Austin Coley. Grand Lake went up 2-0 on RBI singles in the bottom of the third by Meyer and Jacob Reese.

The lead was 3-0 after William Dodd singled home Ryan Blanchard in the fourth.

Lexington rallied to tie the game 5-5 with a five-run fifth.

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was cancelled. Sunday’s twin bill at Stark County was postponed until today at 1 p.m.

Grand Lake improved to 8-19 on the season, 11 games out of first place behind the first-place Cincinnati Steam.
