CELINA — When a team scores a goal in the first 30 seconds, it’s a pretty good sign.

The St. Marys girls soccer team scored its first goal 29 seconds into the match and rode that momentum to a 5-1 victory over the Van Wert Cougars in the Division II sectional soccer tournament at Celina.

The Riders (13-3-1) will now play Celina next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Celina in a district semifinal match.

Van Wert got the opening ball to start the game but the Riders quickly stole the ball and went down the field and sophomore Skylar Liming put the ball in the back of the net with 39:31 left in the first half.

“I’m not sure if it was because of the wind or if it was the shot,” Riders head coach Paul Dingledine said. “The wind might have pushed it toward the goal but we will take it. It was an ice-breaker early for us and that is about as quick as we have scored all year.”

Throughout the game St. Marys had good control of the ball as they had six corner kicks in the first half. After five corner kicks produced nothing, Kayla Boysell took a shot with 11:40 left that just hit the crossbar.

“We have been working on our shots,” Dingledine said. “Our finishing touches are just not quite the greatest and we have been working on it and just can’t seem to find it yet.”

The Riders didn’t get on the board again until 4:08 left in the first half when Kelly Heitkamp took a pass from Molly Albert for a goal to make the score 2-0.

In the second half the Riders didn’t score quite as quick as in the first half but Molly Albert scored a goal with 37:46 left and they scored again 10 minutes later when Kristen Dammeyer scored off an assist from Heitkamp to make the score 4-0 with 27:56 left.

Van Wert spoiled the shutout when Amanda Clay scored with 24 minutes left in the game, but the Riders got that goal back on a goal from Courtney Helmlinger with 5:07 left.
