CELINA — The heated St. Marys-Celina girls soccer rivalry produced a winner for the first time since 2009.

Taylor Guingrich’s early long strike held up the rest of the game, giving Celina a 1-0 win over St. Marys on Thursday night after the two rivals played to 1-1 ties in both 2011 and 2010.

“That was 80 minutes of solid play from both teams,” Celina head coach Cal Freeman said. “It was 100 percent effort from everybody. It was fun. It’s a great rivalry that goes back forever and it’s fun to come out on top.”

After a penalty, Celina got a free direct kick from deep on the left wing in the opening minutes. Guingrich booted the ball into the upper left corner of the net to give Celina a 1-0 lead with 34:43 left in the first half.

“She made the perfect decision on that one,” Celina head coach Cal Freeman said. “She was able to execute it. The goalie played near bar and it was one of those deals where they froze the 18, so Taylor made a great decision and put the ball in the goal.  That was nicely done.”

Neither team could cash in on opportunities the rest of the match.

“The rest of the game was pretty even,” St. Marys head coach Paul Dingledine said. “We had our opportunities. They had a lot more. It was a typical Celina and St. Marys game. Hopefully we get to see them again in the tournament.”

St. Marys fell to 5-1-1 and 2-1-1 in the WBL.

Celina is 7-2 and remains unbeaten at 4-0 in the WBL.
