ELIDA — It all came down to one final possession to decide the opening game of the annual Vicki Mauk Invitational Tournament on Thursday at the Elida Fieldhouse.

The Minster Wildcats trailed by one point but had the ball with 36 seconds left. The Wildcats’ Bridget Geiger got the rebound off a missed shot by Kayla Richard with 4.2 seconds left and was fouled by Imara Haynes. Geiger converted both shots and that was enough to give Minster a 57-56 victory over the Lima Senior Spartans.

Geiger led all scorers for Minster with 23 points and seven rebounds.

“We didn’t have an answer for Geiger inside tonight,” Spartans head coach Vince Halliday said. “We tried numerous different girls, but we didn’t have an answer for her. The bottom line was one last possession. One box out and one defensive rebound and that would have been the ball game.”

Minster did much of its damage at the charity stripe.

In the fourth quarter, as well as the entire game, Minster hit 19 of 24 throughout the game and they were eight of 10 in the fourth quarter.

“I was happy with going to the free throw line,” Minster head coach Nann Stechschulte said. “We went to the line 24 times and made two big free throws at the end. Geiger was 10 of 14 from the line so that shows we are getting the ball into her.”

Minster’s Claire Fischer added 11 points and Kayla Richard had nine points and seven rebounds.

Essence Cowan led the Spartans (5-4) with 16 points. Stacie Allen had 14 points and Benjamin had 13 points.

Minster (6-3) will play Sylvania Southview in the championship game this afternoon at 2:30. Southview defeated Elida 74-49 in the second game.
