GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUND-UP: Riders win at Defiance; Minster, New Knoxville earn MAC wins

DEFIANCE — A trio of Roughriders reached double-figures and the St. Marys girls basketball team’s long trek north to Defiance was rewarded with a 51-41 win on Thursday night.

Kelsey Rohrbach led St. Marys with 13 points, Molly Albert added 12 points and Kelly Heitkamp scored 11 points for the Roughriders.

The Roughriders improved to 3-12 and 2-4 in the Western Buckeye League. The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak and gave the Riders’ their first win since Dec. 13 against Kenton.

St. Marys built a 23-15 halftime lead and hit 9-of-13 free throws in the fourth quarter to pick up the 10-point win.

Defiance’s Emily Spencer scored 17 points to lead the Bulldogs. Nakia Jackson added nine points.

The two teams both had big offensive third quarters, as they combined to score 33 points.

St. Marys’ Reagan Aller scored six points, LeeAnn Bertke had five points, Erika Angstmann had three points and Bailey Gottschalk added a point.

St. Marys hosts New Knoxville on Saturday. The Rider JV team will play Minster at noon and the varsity game against the Rangers will be played afterward.

NEW KNOXVILLE 44, NEW BREMEN 24

NEW KNOXVILLE –The New Knoxville Lady Rangers basketball team didn’t allow the New Bremen Cardinals to get any kind of foothold in the MAC game Thursday night at New Knoxville. With a 14-0 run to begin the game the Rangers cruised to a 44-24 victory at the Barn.

New Bremen was able to stay within range the rest of the half as they trailed 19-11 at halftime.

Haley Horstman was the only player for either team in double figures with 16 points. Haley Moeller led the Cardinals with nine points and eight rebounds.

The Rangers (13-3, 5-1) will travel to St. Marys on Saturday. The Minster JV team will play St. Marys at noon followed by New Knoxville and St. Marys. New Bremen (7-10, 1-4) will play a varsity only game at Sidney Lehman on Saturday starting at 1:00.

MINSTER 48, PARKWAY 40

MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats scored 18 second quarter points over Midwest Athletic Conference opponent, the Parkway Panthers. Parkway outscored Minster in the second half, 23-21 and came within seven points late in the fourth quarter but the home team sealed the 48-40 victory.

“We didn’t play very well and I will give credit to Parkway,” Minster coach Nann Stechschutle said. “They outhustled us, they beat us down the court, played harder than we did and outscored us the second half but we did score 18 points in the second quarter, so that helped and was technically the difference in the game. “

Geiger led all scorers with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Claire Fischer had nine points along with four steals. Taylor Trego finished with eight points for the Wildcats.

Cami Hellworth had 12 points to lead the way for Parkway. Kylie Snyder finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
