February 7, 2014

NEW KNOXVILLE 58, FORT RECOVERY 34

FORT RECOVERY — Haley Horstman became the all-time leading scorer in New Knoxville girls basketball history, as the Rangers kept rolling with a 58-34 win — their 13th straight — at Fort Recovery on Thursday. Horstman, who needed five points to eclipse Jill Henschen Heitkamp’s 1,178 points, hit nine shots from the field and a free throw on the record-setting night. Paige Lehman, who is closing in on 1,000 points, scored 17 points. Lehman is now 14 points away from the millenium mark. Meg Reineke scored nine points for the Rangers, who have won 13 straight games and haven’t allowed an opponent to reach 40 points since Dec. 30. Fort Recovery, which won its first MAC game of the season in four-overtime fashion 70-66 on Monday, fell to 8-9 and 1-7 in conference play. Tori Lennartz led the Indians with eight points. The Rangers and Indians could meet again in the postseason. New Knoxville received a first-round sectional bye and will play the winner of Fort Recovery and St. Henry on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Coldwater.

No. 10 MARION LOCAL 38, NEW BREMEN 36
NEW BREMEN — Brooke Winner’s work on the offensive glass in the fourth quarter kept 10th-ranked Marion Local from being upended on Thursday night at New Bremen. Winner pulled down two rebounds off missed shots and muscled in putbacks in the game’s final two minutes minutes to help the Flyers earn a 38-36 win over the Cardinals. Playing their third game in four days and having played a four-overtime game on Monday against Fort Recovery, the Cardinals took the state-ranked Flyers to the limit. Marion Local, which was ranked 10th in the latest Associated Press poll in Division IV, survived and moved to 15-4 and 5-3 in the MAC. Rosie Westerbeck paced the Cardinals with 14 points. Debbie Paul added nine points. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday, Feb. 19 in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Coldwater. Cadence Jacobs led Marion Local with 12 points. Winner had 10 points.
