GIRLS BASKETBALL: Riders win get first WBL win

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys girls basketball team earned its first Western Buckeye League win, a 34-27 victory over Defiance on Thursday night at Murotech Court.

Ashleigh Falk scored a team-high 13 points and Kelly Heitkamp added 12 points to lead the Riders to their third win of the season.

St. Marys led 15-14 at the half before outscoring the Bulldogs 9-7 in the third quarter and 10-6 in the fourth quarter.

Megan Sewell led Defiance with 16 points.

St. Marys improved to 3-12, 1-5 in the WBL.

The Roughriders travel to Wapakoneta next Thursday night for a 6 p.m. junior varsity tip-off against the Redskins.

OTTAWA — The Wapakoneta Redskins pulled out a 41-27 win over the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball game Thursday night in Ottawa.


Wapak had to overcome a cold night shooting  the basketball for the win.  The Redskins hit on just 17 of 46 field goal attempts (36 percent).

The Redskins had two scorers in double figures.  Senior Courtney Knippen totaled 10 points on 5 of 8 from the floor.  Junior Annie Henderson also scored 10, dropping in a pair of 3-pointers.

For the Titans, Niki Ellerbrock, Elissa Ellerbrock and Libbey Recker scored six points apiece to lead the way.

Wapak improved to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in league play.  O-G is 4-11, 1-5 WBL.

The Redskins return to action at noon Saturday at home against the Minster Wildcats.

Celina took an early lead and maintained it in a high-scoring second half.

The Bulldogs got 18 points from Kylee pBader and 10 points from Taylor Guingrich in the victory.
