MINSTER — The Minster Wildcats hosted the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays in a Midwest Athletic Conference matchup Thursday night. Minster came out strong defensively in the first half and held the Blue Jays to seven first half points.

Minster stepped up the defensive pressure and shots started to fall for the home team as they captured a 31-20 victory.

“Both teams like to play defense and it was a good defensive effort,” Minster coach Nann Stechschulte said. “In terms of just setting the tempo of the game it was sluggish right off the bat.”

The Wildcats (8-5, 3-2 MAC) took a slim 6-2 advantage after the first quarter as the Blue Jays made just one field goal in the first eight minutes of action.

The home team then took an 11-2 lead with a steal and layup from Logan Arnold at the 6:06 mark of the second quarter.

The Lady Wildcats defense forced the Blue Jays to 11 first half turnovers while Minster had nine miscues.

St. John’s (6-5, 1-3) came out the third quarter scoring two back-to-back buckets from Katie Vorst and came within two, 11-13.  Minster’s Claire Fischer found teammate Kayla Richard for a Wildcats score, to take a 19-13 advantage.

Richard put her team ahead, 21-13 with her layup and then two free throws from Sara Dahlinghaus gave Minster a 23-14 lead after three quarters of action.

A long triple from Alexis Wuebker at the start of the fourth quarter gave the Wildcats a 28-16 lead and Bridget Geiger’s bucket extended the home team’s lead, 31-16.

“I went nine deep right off the bat and I think we wore them down a little bit in the third quarter,” Stechschulte said. “I know (Jessica) Recker does a big percentage of the ball handling and we were trying to keep her contained.”

Geiger had eight points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Richard had eight points, three rebounds and two steals.
