DELPHOS — A 9-2 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter was what put the Delphos St. John’s Bluejays over the top as they defeated the New Bremen Cardinals Lady basketball team 38-30 Thursday evening in a MAC contest played at Delphos.
“We stayed with them,” Cardinals head coach Randy Eckert said. “We just had a few mental mistakes that cost us a few points. Our shot selection wasn’t the greatest at the end, but we have to shoot more and try to score.”
“We made a little run in the third quarter,” Delphos head coach Dan Grothouse said. “We executed a little bit better. I thought in the first half we were getting the ball in certain spots but we didn’t finish strong and New Bremen had a lot more energy than we did.”
After missing their first four shots in the third quarter, the Cardinals got a basket by Hannah Holdren off a steal to tie the game at 17-all with 3:51 left. The remainder of the quarter belonged to Delphos as they got layups from Julie Bonifas and Vorst, a pair of free throws from Shelby Reindel and a triple from Vorst to lead 26-19 after three quarters.
“We usually have one bad offensive quarter,” Eckert said. “Defensively we didn’t play bad in the quarter, but they made some shots.”
Kyla Otting led New Bremen with nine points.
The Cardinals (5-11, 0-6) entertain Covington on Saturday, while Delphos (12-5, 3-4) travels to Parkway next Thursday.
